St. John the Baptist Church: The Century-old Spanish Catholic Church of Jimenez

Updated: Jan 14, 2020

The Church of Saint John the Baptist is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. The Century-old Spanish Catholic Church is nestled within the predominantly Catholic town of Jimenez.

Jimenez is one of the nine original towns of Misamis Occidental. Today, it is one of the fastest growing towns in Misamis Occidental.

The church of Jimenez really looks old and silent. It is located along the highway. Even though the church is old, one can still say that the church is beautiful inside out and along with fine design and architecture, visitors will surely be impressed.

Inside the church, people can see the old church altar including the Gothic-style pillars keep its beauty throughout the years. One of the central attractions in the church is the paintings on its ceiling which is really interesting and fascinating.

The church is in good condition and well maintained by the parishioners. In fact, the church is visited by the National Historical Institute or NHI and declared as National Cultural Heritage. Meanwhile, the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (NCCA) started the rehabilitation of the church.

The church serves as the faith foundation of the townsfolk.

This church is one of the aged churches in the country that feature the true essence of faith in our creator. The local government should help support the preservation of the old church.

The locals ought to be gratified to have a heritage treasure that is well preserved and maintained.
